Dr. Jordi Joan Giménez, Senior Research Engineer @ Institut für Rundfunktechnik GmbH

I am a Research Engineer at the Institut für Rundfunktechnik GmbH, the research institute of the public broadcasters ARD, ZDF, Deutschlandradio (Germany), ORF (Austria) and SRG/SSR (Switzerland). I am now involved in the 5G-PPP project 5G-Xcast (Broadband & Multicast Communication Enablers for the Fifth-Generation of Wireless Systems). My main research interests include physical layer signal processing and air-interface design of DTT and 3GPP systems, network planning and optimization of media delivery terrestrial platforms.

I received the M.Sc. degree in Telecommunications Engineering and Ph.D. in Telecommunications from the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), Spain, in 2010 and 2015, respectively.

From 2011 to 2018 I worked as a Research Engineer at the Mobile Communications Group of the Institute of Telecommunications and Multimedia Applications (iTEAM-UPV). I carried out the M.Sc. Thesis on the extension of Digital Terrestrial TV coverage by the use of on-channel repeaters (gap-fillers). This work was awarded in 2012 by the Spanish Professional Organization of Telecommunication Engineers (Colegio Oficial de Ingenieros de Telecomunicación – COIT) at the anual rewards to the best M.Sc. Thesis performed by Telecommunications Engineers in Spain in the category of the best Master Thesis in Innovation in Networks and Services for the Provision of Digital Television Services.

I conducted my PhD degree at UPV with a PhD grant for reseach training from the Vice-Rectorate for Research, Innovation and Transfer of the UPV. The Thesis focused on the application of Multi-RF channel technologies to digital terrestrial broadcasting. In particular, Time Frequency Slicing (TFS) and Channel Bonding where analyzed from multiple points of view, from physical layer performance to network planning implications.

During my doctoral studies, I was an invited researcher at Teracom AB and Wireless@KTH in Sweden. As well, I participated in several research projects with both academic and industrial partners. Among them are the Celtic-Plus ENGINES (led by Nokia with the participation of 33 partners), aimed at supporting and validating the DVB-T2, T2Lite and DVB-NGH standard, or FREEDOM (led by SAPEC, EGATEL and AXION), aimed at providing high quality ENG/OB (Electronic News Gathering / Outside Broadcasting) contents through dedicated terrestrial links over DVB-T2 and HEVC. I have also conducted several studies on the interference between digital TV systems (DVB-T/T2, NTSC, ISDB-T) and LTE in the 700 MHz and 800 MHz bands. I have actively participated in the standardization process of DVB-NGH inside the Framing, Sounding and Synchronization working group, in the DVB TM MIMO Study Mission and in the DVB TM-T and DVB CM-T groups.

After finalising the Ph.D. Thesis in June 2015, I conducted a three-months stay at the Institut für Rundfunktechnik (IRT) in Munich where I finished the studies on TFS and Channel Bonding by performing coverage estimation exercises over real networks. In September 2015 I was awarded a two-years Post-Doc Fellowship from Generalitat Valenciana.
